Job Summary: Laboratory Technologist

Position Summary

  • Ifakara Health Institute seeks a qualified Lab Technologist to perform laboratory testing required for the management of patients with HIV and or TB including co-morbidities. The candidate will be required to deliver improved services in collaboration with the hospital, governmental authorities, and within the existing research platform of the Kilombero and Ulanga Antiretroviral Cohort (KIULARCO).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory testing on blood samples, biological fluids and other materials (e.g. Full blood picture, chemistry, CD4, viral load, resistance testing, Crag screening, culture, and others according to KIULARCO protocol and additional tests according to study protocols).
  • Perform maintenance and quality control to the laboratory equipment.
  • Prepare a checklist for laboratory consumables and reagents.
  • Perform quality control measures and quality assurance of laboratory tests.
  • Entering data into the computer.
  • Freezing of samples for biobank, organization of biobank.
  • Share knowledge and/or train team members as needed.
  • Participate in relevant national and international networks, meetings and conferences.
  • Develop research projects, perform research and write manuscripts.
  • Contribute to studies within KIULARCO and other IHI projects initiated through the Chronic Diseases Clinic of Ifakara (CDCI).
  • Write SOPs for the handling of lab testing and quality assurance.
  • Attend all compulsory meetings such every Tuesday at CDCI and other IHI/hospital meetings according to their profession.
  • Assist to plan, coordinate, and support research activities organized by IHI and other partners.
  • Perform any additional task assigned by the PL and/or Director of SFRRH when necessary.

Qualification and Experience

  • Diploma in Medical Laboratory, Zoology or related field.
  • Experience in HIV/TB patients, or a certificate with relevant experience.

Skills and Competencies

  • Fluent in both Swahili and English language.
  • Interest in TB/HIV.
  • High motivation for research activities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative management style.
  • Capable of building and sustaining relationships with senior professionals.
  • Professional attitude to work and clear work ethics.
  • Result oriented.

Position Summary

  • Ifakara Health Institute seeks a qualified Research Officer Intern who will be responsible for evaluating, diagnosing, treating and managing patients with HIV and or TB in the in- and outpatient facilities at St. Francis Regional Referral Hospital (SFRRH). The Intern will be required to deliver improved services in collaboration with the hospital, government authorities, and health implementing partners. The Research Officer will supervise and train younger colleagues on diagnostic workup and management of patients and collaborate within the existing research platform of the Kilombero and Ulanga Antiretroviral Cohort (KIULARCO). They will also be encouraged to develop their own research agenda and research project(s).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Treat PLHIV and/or TB according to National Guidelines for Clinical Management of HIV/AIDS and TB, Standard Treatment Guidelines, and Local Guidelines.
  • Supervise and train younger medical doctors and clinical officers in diagnosis and management of patients with HIV and/or TB.
  • Diagnose and treat Opportunistic Infections (OI) and/or referral to appropriate departments.
  • Maintain proper patient documentation, filling of case report forms (CRF) including CTC 1/2.
  • Consultation and ward rounds to PLHIV admitted to different departments at SFRRH.
  • Work in full agreement with the job descriptions; Chronic Diseases Clinic of Ifakara (CDCI), hospital and government (MOH) regulations.
  • Provide health education and adherence counseling to PLHIV and clients attending CDCI.
  • Attend all compulsory meetings such every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at CDCI and Friday 07.30-9.00 at SFRRH clinical hall.
  • Attend scientific meetings at IHI.
  • Contribute in planning, coordination, and performance of research activities/studies organized by IHI and other partners.
  • Perform any additional task assigned by the PL and/or site director of IHI and/or director general of SFRRH when necessary.

Qualification and Experience

  • Bachelor Degree in Medicine (MD).
  • Certificate of internship.
  • Registration to the Medical Council of Tanganyika (or application in progress).
  • Experience in HIV/TB patients, or a certificate with relevant experience.
