POSITION SUMMARY:
The General Manager is responsible for all aspects of operations for our client DCM Safari company, to day-to-day staff management and guests. He/She should be an ambassador for the brand. Provide leadership and strategic planning to all departments in support of our service culture, maximized operations and guest satisfaction. Work Very closely with the company owners and other stake holders.
Responsible for managing the DMC management team and overall, Company targets to deliver an excellent Guest experience.
Job Description:
Main objectives:
- To direct all activities of the company so that it is run professionally, sustainably, and efficiently.

- To maintain our reputation as a responsible organization, with high-quality services by our competitors, suppliers, authorities and guests.
- To ensure company compliance with government laws and regulations.
Managerial duties:
- Daily supervision and management of all staff, and thus all Human Resources (HR). See detail below in ‘Human Resources’.
- Review and manage implementation of protocols to ensure the safety of the passengers, employees.
- Overseeing all field operations. See detail below in ‘Operations’
- Review and manage implementation of protocols to ensure the maintenance of inventory, as well as function and form of the company equipment. See detail below in ‘Equipment’
- Reporting to the Managing Director on all matters of significance.
- Managing PR relationships with all 3rd party suppliers, competitors, authorities and the community.
- Reviewing the organizational structure (represented in the organizational chart) and report to Managing Director on matters that can significantly increase management efficiency and profitability.
- Reviewing all current systems and practices in regard to sustainability, as per ND’s mission statement, and protocols which are documented in the HR manual, website, and other company documents.
Human Resources:
- Take time to meet and talk with each employee as the opportunity arises, to familiarize yourself with the ND staff and understand and review their various skills, with the goal of managing and directing HR.
- Regularly review staff performances, and give and take feedback. Report to the Managing Director on significant news.
- Manage the training of all staff, and development, maintenance and regulation of emergency protocols and sustainability standards.
- Manage off-season meetings and training sessions.
Financial duties:
- Controlling expenses in order to return an acceptable profit margin to the stockholders, including maintenance and management of financial control systems currently used, including:
- Kilimanjaro staff charts
- COT food purchase charts
- G&A expense charts
- Managing the financial performance of the company’s G&A costs and Cost of Tours (COT), including:
- Management, monitoring and control of company G&A expenditures, and collection of expense data and reports.
- Management and control of (checking, authorizing and recording) all MOUNTAIN and SAFARI Cost of Tour (COT expenses)
- Development, management and monitoring the monthly and annual expense budgets
- Overseeing the funding the operation of the company as per the budget
- Directing and overseeing the preparation of timely P&L reports per trip and, G&A expense reports per month.
- Management of payroll, all loan and salary advances, as per the company’s HR manual.
- Liaising with ND accounts, CSM, DSA and sales staff, on matters of receivables, to ensure that all receivables are collected in a timely manner.
Sales collateral:
- To manage current contracts with all 3rd party suppliers (hotels and other companies from which the company buys services) to engineer to most favourable rates, and with special emphasis to develop relationships with sustainably minded accommodation suppliers and other subcontractors.
- Be familiar with route itineraries, ND trek service levels, and various additional components and how these influence the operational process, sales process, and financial results.
Customer service:
- Ensuring that all clients and agents receive full professional care and attention.
- Briefing and debriefing clients occasionally, when needed.
- Always be presentable around customers and talk to them about their experience in order to gain knowledge about their trips.
- Oversee the CMS’s reporting to agents regarding trip reports, customer feedback and/or significant news regarding all clients.
- IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS – keep informed of the details of the patient’s condition, the whereabouts of the guide and location of meeting point(s). Coordinate evacuation as required. Liaise with the Customer Service Manager (CSM) and agent, when required on the details of the situation. Arrange additional support/replacement staff if needed. Work with the ND team regarding vehicle requirements, accommodation etc. Collect the Emergency Descent notes (SOAP) and assist the CSM to prepare reports for the Managing Director.
Operations:
- Overseeing all field operations, including:
- Overseeing the scheduling, planning and organization of all treks and safaris
- Making field trips spot checking safari and mountain crews in the field.
- Visit parks and increase personal knowledge of client service areas.
- Reporting to the Managing Director on all matters of significance in terms of operational challenges, mistakes, or notable successes!
- Liaising with the DSA on sales matters and trip reporting
- Management and logging all guide performance based on guide reports, management reports, conversations, and incidents.
- Overseeing all field operations via the Assistant GM, including:
- Overseeing the scheduling, planning and organization of all treks and safaris
- Making field trips spot checking safari and mountain crews in the field, and increasing personal knowledge of client service areas
Equipment:
- Overseeing the Equipment/Store Manager(s)
- Managing the off-season plan of equipment inventories, ensuring that the equipment is in house.
- Managing the off-season plan of equipment repair and maintenance (R&M) and fabrication
- Review and manage implementation of protocols to maximize proper function and form of the equipment.
- Make spot checks on tents and other equipment as crews are cleaning and storing away after trips to ensure quality is in place.
- Ordering new equipment, as per the Capital Expense and G&A budget
Experience:
At least 5 to 7 years’ experience as DMC General Manager in East Africa Countries, with significant safaris business management background.
Work Station:
The successful candidate will be based in Arusha where our client office is located.
