Position Details
Position Title: Technician 2 – Metallurgical
Department: Process Plant

Purpose of the Role
To provide technical and metallurgical support that ensures the Process Plant achieves maximum metallurgical efficiency. The role involves monitoring and optimizing plant performance, supporting production teams with technical expertise, and contributing to process improvements through data analysis, metallurgical test work, and operational initiatives.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgy and Mineral Processing Engineering.
Experience
- 2–4 years of laboratory or metallurgical test work experience, preferably in a gold processing environment.
- Hands-on experience in metallurgical sampling, laboratory analysis, and geometallurgical test work.
- Familiarity with laboratory instruments, calibration procedures, and sample analysis.
Additional Requirements
- Strong knowledge of metallurgical and geometallurgical laboratory test procedures.
- Ability to conduct diagnostic test work (comminution, leaching, and gravity concentration).
- Competence in sample preparation, bottle roll testing, sieving, and XRF analysis.
- Proficiency in laboratory equipment calibration and reagent handling.
- Strong data capturing, analytical, and reporting skills.
- Computer literacy in MS Excel, databases, and plant/lab monitoring systems.
Key Accountabilities
1. Safety & Compliance
- Champion and enforce safe work practices in all laboratory and plant activities.
- Ensure compliance with statutory and company safety regulations.
- Promote a safety-first culture by mentoring junior staff, conducting toolbox talks, and identifying potential hazards.
2. Sampling & Plant Support
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise weekly, monthly, and quarterly crushing and milling circuit surveys.
- Conduct belt-cut and milling/classification surveys and provide optimization recommendations.
- Oversee grade control sampling, submission, and validation in collaboration with the SGS laboratory.
- Support metallurgists during rise test exercises and troubleshoot sampling challenges.
3. Sample Preparation & Laboratory Operations
- Supervise sample homogenization, splitting, and preparation for physical and chemical analysis.
- Monitor sieving operations to ensure accuracy and compliance with quality standards.
- Review and interpret bottle roll and re-leach test results for metallurgical decision-making.
- Design and execute geometallurgical test programs (comminution, concentration, leaching) to support process improvement.
4. Laboratory Test Work & Analysis
- Independently design, conduct, and analyze metallurgical and geometallurgical test work.
- Prepare technical reports and present findings to plant management.
- Perform advanced analysis using XRF to ensure data accuracy and reliability.
- Oversee calibration and verification of laboratory instruments (pH meters, DO meters, mass balances, etc.).
- Maintain standard solutions and manage laboratory consumable inventories.
5. Laboratory Equipment & Maintenance
- Train and guide staff in the safe and efficient operation of key laboratory equipment (jaw crusher, tumbling mill, bottle roll machine, sieve shaker, rotary splitter, gravity concentrator).
- Manage laboratory equipment maintenance, coordinate repairs, and ensure minimal downtime.
- Develop and implement equipment management procedures for efficiency, safety, and longevity.
6. Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement
- Lead compliance with laboratory corrective action procedures and resolve deviations promptly.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives and recommend innovative test methods.
- Provide mentorship and technical guidance to laboratory personnel.
- Maintain accurate records of test work, reagent usage, and performance data for decision support.
